In order to accept credit cards from your customers, you need to have a Merchant Account. This is, you need to establish an account with a company who authorizes and processes credit card transactions.
Why Do I Need It?
You don't. That is, unless you want to increase your business by a reported 40% over people who do not take credit cards! A huge number of people today use credit cards to make purchases because of the convenience and ease of use. Also, you're likely to get a lot more "impulse" sales if you are able to accept credit cards.

What Is Gateway Access?
If you're interested in doing business over the Internet and would like "hands-off," automatic credit card processing, you'll need "Gateway Access." "Gateway Access" is the name for the technology and systems which can automatically credit card payments for orders taken over the Internet. The payment is placed into your bank account without any action required on your part.
Do I Have To Order Gateway Access For My SMC eCommerce Web Site?
No. If you prefer, you can simply key in or phone in credit card orders received on your web site, using your Merchant Account as described earlier (some merchant account providers may have restrictions on web-based orders). However... If you want credit card processing to be a "hands-off" process, you'll need Gateway Access.
