With the holiday season fast approaching, it becomes more and more important to keep your eMerchantClub eCommerce website stocked with the most up-to-date and timely products. Potential shoppers will expect to see plenty of seasonal items and will be more likely to complete a purchase if your site contains relevant products that get updated regularly.
Keeping track of your product inventory and making changes to that inventory on a regular basis may seem like a daunting task. After all, retail stores often employ a large workforce whose sole responsibility is to keep track of inventory and restock products.
Although your workforce may be limited to one person – yourself – you have at your disposal one very versatile tool, your eMerchantClub eCommerce website. If you have a Version 9 eCommerce website, using the Data Update feature gives you the ability to easily update your product inventory with a few clicks of the mouse.
With the Data Update feature, you can:
- Delete all existing departments and products (including non-SMC) and replace them with new SMC data.
- Delete all SMC products and replace them with new SMC data. (non-SMC products are preserved).
- Delete all discontinued SMC products and delete empty departments.
- Add all new SMC products that are missing from your store. (This option is available on Deluxe sites only).
Viewing this screen for the first time may bring to mind images of accidentally pressing one button and causing your website to blow up.

But, don't let this idea detract you from using this extremely useful tool. The chances of accidentally altering your website's inventory by
inadvertently
clicking on this page are extremely small. Changes do not take effect on your site until you are given the opportunity to carefully review them. It takes a total of five clicks to activate changes on your site with this feature, so rest assured that it is very safe to use.
When properly used, this tool can help you manage the process of keeping your website fresh and up to date. At a minimum, we recommend you use this feature once a month to refresh your site with SMC's newest products.
For example, if you have a Deluxe website, you can use the fourth option (add all new SMC products that are missing from your store) to easily add all of the new products that have come out for that month without deleting any other products. This is a quick and easy alternative to using the SMC's New Arrivals option to import these products. If you then use the third option (Delete all discontinued SMC products and delete empty departments), you can be sure that your site will contain all of the newest products without any discontinued items.
If you do not have a Deluxe website, you can accomplish this same goal by using the second option (delete all SMC products and replace them with new SMC data). The only difference between the second and fourth option is that the second option also deletes all existing SMC products and departments.
This may sound intimidating. However since this option also adds all current SMC products and departments, the net effect is that all missing and new SMC products and departments are added to your store. You should be careful in using these options if you have changed the names of SMC products or departments and you do not wish to lose these changes. You should also be aware that the first option (Delete all existing departments and products and replace them with new SMC data) will also delete your non-SMC products.
Remember, you will be given plenty of time to review changes before you commit to them, so feel free to utilize these options. This extremely useful tool will help assure that your customers keep coming back to your site to look for new products during this holiday season.
